SEO - what is it? And why is it important?

Well here’s the basic information you need to know about what SEO does:

SEO stands for ‘Search Engine Optimisation’ which helps improve and increase the amount of visitors or ‘traffic’ on your website.

SEO is important in improving the user experience and usability of a website, users trust those web pages that show up in the top rankings of the users search results meaning increased traffic, activity and even customers.

But how exactly does SEO do this you ask?

Well, SEO isn’t just about search engines themselves, it’s also about understanding what people are searching for online and the words they use. If you know the answers to these things then this will increase your chances of reaching and connecting with people online.

Now onto the technical stuff… Search engines process and evaluate which content is most likely to answer the searchers query which is calculated through the processes called; crawling, indexing and ranking.

Sounds strange i know, but Google constantly crawls and scours the internet in search for new information which is known as crawling.

What does it do with all of that new information? Well, imagine a library full of information… indexing is when Google stores and organises the content they have found. This is stored into a massive database, like a library you could say, so that when people search, Google can quickly help answer their query.

This is the important bit. Let me give you an example, say someone searches for ‘best rated laptops’ on Google, it will search through it’s ‘index’ to find a website that provides the content that will best answer the searchers query. In hope that the top search results will be the most relevant in answering the searchers query. (That’s the intention anyway!)

But how does ranking work exactly?

Well, in order for search engines to rank URLs to determine the most relevant to the least relevant they use ‘algorithms’. An algorithm is a process or formula by which stored information is retrieved and ordered in meaningful ways in order to help the searchers query.
